Salt Lake City Park System
Salt Lake City has an extensive park system. In the last several decades, Salt Lake City and county have made extensive investments to upgrade the park systems. Perhaps the most exciting development in the park system is a concerted effort to connect the county parks with greenways.
An an unemployed bum with a digital camera, I've taken pictures of several of the regional parks. This page is an index to the picture galleries. I will start with description of the major parks in the valley, followed by regional park ways and will wrap up with some of the interesting local parks that help define Salt Lake Neighborhoods. I apologize if I missed your favorite park.
Salt Lake's Premiere Parks
This is the Place Heritage Park sits at the mouth of Emigration Canyon across from Hogel Zoo. The park includes a model pioneer village with informative displays about the early exploration of Utah and the lives of the Utah pioneers. At the time of this review, the entry fee for the pioneer village was $6.00 for an adult. The most prominent feature of the park is the "This is the Place Monument." Cyclists enjoy the ride up Emigration Canyon. (I should say, they enjoy the ride down the canyon, the ride up the canyon takes effort). The park features prominently in the July 24th Pioneer Day celebrations.
Liberty Park is Salt Lake City's primary park. The park stretches North South from 900 S to 1300 S and East East West from 500 E to 700 E. The park houses Tracy Aviary, an amusement park for kids, volley ball courts, tennis courts, a pool and is the focal point of many city wide celebrations.
Sugar House Park is in the Sugar House district near 2100 South and 1300 East...just west of Highland Highschool. This park is near Parley's Creek and features a collection of rolling hills with ponds and other attractions. The park is the center of many community events.
Murray City Park, on State Street at about 5100 South, is an impressive park with numerous playing fields, an aquatic center, ice skating rink, ampitheater, arboretum and walkways along Little Cottonwood Creek.
Located at the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, the park is the center of numerous community and sporting events.
Creekside Park and Holladay-Lions Fitness and Recreation Center, at 1661 E Murray-Holladay Road in the cental valley, is a focal point of the Salt Lake County Park and Recreation System. This Park includes a massive recreation center, senior center and frisbee golf course. The area includes trails and other open space. NOTE, you must run across a busy street between the Park and Fitness Center.
Regional Parkways
The Jordan River Parkway runs along the Jordan River in the center of the Salt Lake Valley. The parkway connects a large number of neigborhood parks into a solid green band in the center of the metropolitan area.
The Bonneville Shoreline Trail is a system of parkways stretching along the eastern benches from Ogden to Mount Nebo south of Provo. The trailway caters to cyclists and walkers. One of the prominent features of the trail is Parley's Crossing.
Neighborhood Parks
The large lawn at the City County Building is a popular location for festivals and mid day breaks for workers in downtown Salt Lake. When combined with the square behind the new Salt Lake County Library there is sufficient square footage for the Arts Festivals and other major events.
Olympus Hills Park is a neighborhood park just west of I215 in the Olympus Cove area at 4500 South. This park features a large expanse of native plants surrounded by a cement walkway. There are plenty of stairs for people who like changes in elevation when they walk. There is an overpass just north east of the park that leads to Churchill Middle School on Wasatch Boulevard. The park features tennis courts, a baseball and soccer field.
