Marriott - History

The Marriotts have deep ties with Utah. J.W. Marriott (1900-1985) was born in Ogden, he attended both Weber Junior College and the University of Utah. In 1927, J.W. Marriott and his wife Alice Sheets (1907-2000) left Salt Lake City to build their fortunes by starting a nine stool A.W. Root Beer stand in Washington, DC.. To sell more root beer, they added spicy Mexican food. The business incorporated as Hot Shoppes in 1929.

Hot Shoppes suffered losses during depression. The company was able to build up catering contracts with airlines and the food services with the government. During WWII, Hot Shoppes provided food services to help with the war effort.

In 1954, Hot Shoppes opened their first motel, the 365 room Twin Bridge in Arlington, Virginia. Hot Shoppes continued to expand their food and hotel services. In 1967, the company changed its name from Hot Shoppes to Marriott Corporation. (NYSE MAR)

The Marriotts have been extremely active in the Salt Lake Valley. The Marriott family donated the funds needed for the Marriott Library at the University of Utah and have helped with a variety of other notable efforts in the Salt Lake Valley. The Marriott Library was built in 1967, expanded in 2002 and is currently slated for a major renovation to bring the bring the old structure up to modern earthquate codes.
