The Marriotts and Utah
The Marriott Family has strong ties with the Salt Lake Valley. In a rags to riches story, John Willard Marriott (1900-1985) left his native state of Utah in 1926 after graduating from the University of Utah. He opened an A&W Rootbeer franchises in the sweltering heat of Washington, D.C..
Sensing the American desire for spicy foods. J.W. Marriott added Mexican Food to the menu and changed the store name to Hot Shoppe. Marriott's business grew during World War II by providing food services to the US military.
After the war, JW Marriott expanded into the hotel business with the purchase of the Twin Bridges Motor Lodge in Arlington, Va.. This hotel side of the business has grown to over 2600 hotels (directly owned or franchised) in 65 countries. Brands in the Marriott family include Marriott Hotel Resorts & Suites, Renaissance Hotels, Residence Inn, Courtyard by Marriott, TownePlace Suites, Fairfield Inn, SpringHill Suites, Marriott Conference Centers, Marriott Executive Residences and Marriott Vacation Club International.
The Marriotts have given back to the Salt Lake community quite generously with donations to the University of Utah Marriott Library and other local cultural institutions.
