The Spectrum Academy

The Spectrum Academy in North Salt Lake is one of a new breed of charter schools designed for children with special needs. In this case the school provides education for students with Asperger's Syndrome or related forms of Autism. The school opened in 2006. The web site has sections for news, donations, volunteers and employment.

The about page includes statistics on autism in Utah. The site indicates that 1 of every 166 children are born with a form of autism. The site also puts forward a rather bizarre statistic that the number of children diagnosed with autism has increased 881% in the last 12 years. The site does not say if this is because diagnosis is getting better, the accepted definition of autism has expanded, or if there is something in the water that is causing kids to have autism at an increased frequency.
