Utah Newspaper Project

Ownership of the Salt Lake Tribune has been in flux for the last several decades. The paper has been the victim of corporate mergers, spin offs and bankruptcies.

Both the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News are printed and distributed by a business called the Utah Media Group (formerly called The Newspaper Agency Corporation).

Utah Newspaper Project claims that after the last round of mergers. The Deseret News has effectively emasculated the Tribune, transferring control and profit of the Salt Lake Tribune to the Deseret News.

Joan's O'Brien's group "Cititizens for Two Voices" launched an anti-trust lawsuit against the Utah Media Group and Deseret News.

The group is seeking the sale of the company to an independent party. Possible buyers include the original owners of the Tribune or members of the Huntsman family.

NOTE: The LDS Church owns much of the media in the valley including Deseret News, KSL Radio, KSL-TV, KBYU, Deseret Books, Seagull Books, and numerous local web sites. The ownership is distributed through a complex network of holding companies.

As ownership does effect content, I concur that there are merits to this issues addressed by the Utah Newspaper Project.
