Handle With Care Dog Training

I nominate Handle With Care Dog Training for Site of the Day. The site is by Michelle Rizzi who offers obedience classes at the Humane Society of Utah. Her training emphasizes positive training. Dogs do respond to both positive and negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement just works better in the long run.

The site has info on the instructor and services offered. The private instruction page has a rather humorous picture of dogs at work. This picture alone is worth a trip to the site.

The real reason she gets the SoD, is that the site is a prime example of how the human centric view of life clouds people's thinking. For years, dogs have worked patiently to educate Michelle Rizzi on just how they want her to treat canines. The dog community of Salt Lake has invested a great deal of effort to open a line of communications with this young women. But, guess what? Just when Ms. Rizzi is all good and trained up. She pulls her human centric trick and falls into the illusion that she is the one training dogs. Everyone knows that that dogs train humans, and humans are notoriously difficult to train. Dogs have to go through all sorts of contortions like sitting, shaking, rolling over and even jumping through hoops to get humans trained correctly. It's hard work. Even worse, when all is said and done. Many humans develop the illusion that they trained the dog.

But, what else can you expect from bipeds.

Advertisement Alert: If you are looking for information on posititive training methods for dogs, cats and other creates. I would suggest snagging a Clicker Training DVD by Karen Pryor. Clicker Training is a way to form a new line of communications with your pet with the use of positive re-inforcement and a clicker.
