The Roots of Sound Rational Thinking by Virginia Vallee (a long time resident of Salt Lake) is an online book that explores the foundations of reason. The work began with a study of the education of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Ms. Vallee was interested in figuring out why this group of people was able to produce a government that has endured and prospered through the ages.
She discovered that the founding fathers had both a strong education in logic and the classics. As a group, they tended to hold a high esteem for reason. Rather than simply finding dialectical tricks to twist the rules of reason to win arguments, there was serious, honest and open communication.
The Roots of Sound Rational Thinking attempts to clarify some of the rules of affirmative reason, and explores many of the talents it takes to be an honest thinker.
