Lasting Light; Stephen Trimble.

Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography is far more than a book of pretty pictures. The book shows the work of 21 top photographers of the last 125, who've ventured into the canyon and brought forth different views of this wonder of nature.

Salt Lake 2002; Lee Benson, et al, pages 126.

History in the making: This official book of the 2002 Olympics is a high quality coffee table book with photographs of Salt Lake and surrounding communities. Written before the 2002 Olympics, it concentrates on the history leading up to the event. It includes several pages on the Olympic Bidding Scandal. It has other sections on the geology of the west, Salt Lake pioneers, and pictures of winter sports events, and athletes.

The main reason for buying the book is the pictures. The photographer, John Telford, does an excellent job capturing light. So although the book has a moniker of the 2002 Olympics, its biggest audience will be people who want a high quality coffee table of Utah.

Desert Solitaire; Edward Abbey.

Written in the 60s, before the great onslaught of tourists into Southern Utah, Desert Solitaire is a eulogy for a great land that was soon to be trodden under by the masses. The book is a radical and passionate plea for preservation.

Personally, I place Desert Solitaire as one of the greatest pieces of literature to ever come from Utah. Deeply personal, highly irreverant and extremely radical. The book served as a major voice for environmental causes, and deserves a high ranking in any list of natural journals. It is one of the few must reads for the region.

Utah Flowers; Richard J Shaw, pages 242.

This is a fantastic introductory guide to Utah Wild Flowers. It would be a fantastic gift for anyone interested in Utah's mountains. The book has very clean photographs of a litte over 100 Utah wildflowers. Each picture has a small 100 word description of the flower. The pictures highlight the beauty of the flowers. However, it does not give you enough information to identify plants. The pictures don't show you the leaves, and the descriptions don't go into enough detail about the plants to identify them. This book would be a great gift for anyone who enjoys walking in the Wasatch and Uintah mountains. It may not be the right work for someone wanting to do major work in identifying flowers.
